KUALA LUMPUR, 30 March 2023 – MR D.I.Y, Malaysia’s favourite home improvement retailer, is playing its part in ensuring future generations of Malaysians are digitally literate by donating 487 computer sets worth more than RM480,000 to schools across Peninsular Malaysia.
The donation, which was completed in 2022, was part of the Computer Empower Initiative by the Medical Awareness Camp Outreach [MACO]. MACO is an NGO formed by a group of specialist doctors and non-medical volunteers who provide free medical services, meals, food aid, and refurbished computers to the underprivileged.
The computers were sourced from MR D.I.Y.’s headquarters in Seri Kembangan as well as its stores around the country, and refurbished by the MR D.I.Y. IT Department. Thanks to their efforts, 10 schools received complete refurbished computer sets, inclusive of Central Processing Units (CPU)s, monitors, keyboards, and accessories.
Commenting on the initiative, a MR D.I.Y. spokesperson said, “Computer literacy is an essential skill in today’s world. Students need computer skills to do everything from research to putting together research papers and presentations, right through to applying for university places and jobs.
“Plus, with the advent of technology and artificial intelligence, all job applicants now require some basic computer knowledge to be considered for employment. This effort makes computers accessible to the unprivileged, who may otherwise not have access to hardware with which to develop and practice their knowledge. It is just one of the many ways we are helping make a positive impact on the lives of Malaysians.”
The spokesperson thanked MACO for organising the initiative, saying “This is an excellent example of how effective partnerships can work. MACO has the platform to identify and reach students in need, while MR D.I.Y Group has the resources to make their aim a reality. We hope many other corporates will support partnerships like this; by working together so much more can be achieved.”
This is the second time that MR D.I.Y is working with MACO on such an initiative. In April 2022, MACO repurposed over 2,000 computer sets to equip computer laboratories in schools under the Computer Empowerment Programme; with some of these coming from MR D.I.Y and with the support of the company’s IT team.
MACO’s Computer Empowerment Programme is one of the many initiatives that MR D.I.Y. supports to aid school communities. In 2022, the retailer initiated the ‘School Meal Pack by MR D.I.Y.’’ programme, distributing milk, bread, and mineral water to primary schools in Selangor. The retailer has previously distributed COVID-19 test kits to schools and regularly provides support to low-income families
