Low-income families receive a ‘Back to school’ boost from MR D.I.Y.

KUALA LUMPUR, 21 MARCH 2023 – A group of 570 school children and their parents in four states — Terengganu, Pahang, Selangor and Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur – were treated to a back-to-school surprise today, thanks to the nation’s largest home improvement retailer, MR D.I.Y Group Berhad [MR D.I.Y].

The retailer mobilised its MR D.I.Y. Cares team of volunteers, along with volunteers from their partner Soroptimist International Damansara, to ensure the schoolchildren were well equipped with school essentials when they head into the new academic year.

The volunteers packed and distributed ‘Back to School’ kits for students of Sekolah Kebangsaan Payoh, Kemasik and Sekolah Kebangsaan Kijal; both in Terengganu.

The retailer also collaborated with undergraduates from a local higher learning institution, Universiti Teknologi MARA [UiTM], who helped distribute kits to the children of Sekolah Kebangsaan Lemoi, Cameron Highlands, Pahang.

The children received school bags, pencil cases, pencil sets, notebooks, pens, colour pencils, and files.

Commenting on the ‘Back to School’ initiative, a spokesperson for MR D.I.Y. said “MR D.I.Y. has always been a ‘go-to’ place for parents looking to stock up on school essentials – they know that we sell the supplies they need at always low prices. And we also understand the struggle that Malaysian parents are experiencing. Rising prices and growing inflation are putting immense pressure on family budgets, which is why we initiated the ‘Back to School’ programme – we hope to ease the burden of low-income families, while ensuring their children keep learning.”

The retailer also distributed school essentials to the children of Rumah Nur Sakinah, Bandar Pinggiran Subang, Selangor, and Program Perumahan Rakyat (PPR) Pinggiran Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur.

The ‘Back to School’ initiative is one of several that MR D.I.Y. has launched in recent years to help students and their families stay focused on learning. In 2022, the retailer initiated the ‘School Meal Pack by MR D.I.Y.’ programme, distributing milk, bread, and mineral water to primary schools in Selangor. The retailer previously distributed COVID-19 test kits to schools as part of its ‘Sentiasa Berwaspada Tanggungjawab Bersama’ initiative to ensure the students stay safe and keep learning.
