CINE FAN CELEBRATES CINEMA LEGENDS, BOOKENDS SUMMER IFF WITH NEW FILMS BY GIDDENS KO AND YAMADA YOJI

31 July 2023 (Hong Kong)The Cine Fan Summer International Film Festival (Summer IFF) will return after a two-year hiatus with a stunning line-up.  

Acclaimed director Giddens Ko and a star-studded cast will kick off the 16-day  extravaganza on 15 August with his latest gangster romantic comedy, Miss Shampoo.  It concludes on 30 August with Japanese maestro Yamada Yoji’s Mom, Is That You?!, the  touching third film of his Mother series, starring the legendary Yoshinaga Sayuri. 

From Hong Kong, Nate Ki will present the Asian premiere of his directorial debut, Back  Home, a spine-tingling horror film starring Mirror’s Anson Kong that promises to be one  of Hong Kong’s best in recent years. 

Celebrated musician and composer Lim Giong, renowned for his score for The Assassin,  will share his insights and perspectives on the interaction of sound and image in a  masterclass. This transcendent wuxia classic, with which Hou Hsiao-Hsien won Best  Director at Cannes, will also be featured in the Back to the Screen section alongside  Furuhata Yasuo’s award-winning Poppoya – Railroad Man

Fresh from the international festival circuit, Summer IFF’s line-up includes Pedro  Almodóvar’s Strange Way of Life, François Ozon’s The Crime is Mine, Hong Sang-Soo’s  in our day, and Jean-Luc Godard’s Trailer of the Film That Will Never Exist: Phony Wars.  New films by emerging directors will also gain spotlights, including Past Lives by Celine  Song and A Place Called Silence by Sam Quah. South Korean director Jason Yu will also  present his debut feature, Sleep, to the Hong Kong audience. 

The Fantastic Beats section features six dynamic films, including Narushima Izuru’s  Father of the Milky Way Railroad, starring Yakusho Koji and Suda Masaki, Ogigami  Naoko’s Ripples, and Weston Razooli’s Riddle of Fire. The Feinaki Beijing Animation

Week – Chinese Language Film Selection comprises nine works that exemplify the  passion and creativity of independent Chinese animation artists from different regions. 

Another new feature this year is the Neo Cine VR section, which allows viewers to  experience storytelling in a fully immersive and interactive manner through 11 critically  acclaimed virtual reality films. 

Summer IFF will celebrate two legends who have forever transformed cinema: Pema  Tseden and Ozu Yasujiro. The Transcending Tibetan Cinema: The Pema Tseden  Retrospective pays tribute to the trailblazing director who made history by presenting  an authentic portrait of contemporary Tibetan life. Filmmakers Jigme Trinley and  Dukar Tserang will meet the Hong Kong audience to share their views on how this late  director contributed to modern Tibetan culture. 

In honour of the 120th anniversary of Ozu Yasujiro’s birth and the 60th anniversary of his  passing, Ozu 120: A Modest Elegance presents five of his classic films, all recently  restored, inviting audiences to rediscover the iconic Japanese auteur’s profound artistry  and enduring magic. Dragnet Girl, his silent gangster masterpiece, will add a  mesmerising touch with live music accompaniment by notable Hong Kong musician  Olivier Cong.
