KUALA LUMPUR (Apr. 28, 2023) — In conjunction with Earth Day 2023, INNSiDE By Meliá Kuala Lumpur Cheras announced its latest sustainability initiatives in Malaysia. The newly-launched urban hotel introduced an edible garden for which it plants vegetables and herbs to be used in its kitchen. In an effort to conserve water, the hotel will be using collected rainwater for daily use (such as watering the plant and car park washing). With the introduction of these initiatives, INNSiDE By Meliá Kuala Lumpur Cheras aims to address climate change concerns by reducing carbon footprint in its day-to-day operations.

Ada Jian, General Manager of INNSiDE by Meliá Kuala Lumpur Cheras, said, “We are thrilled to announce the addition of an edible garden to our hotel as part of our ongoing green commitment. Sustainability is crucial for the environment and enhances the guest experience by providing fresh, locally sourced ingredients for our restaurant. The garden features a variety of herbs and vegetables that will be used in our dishes, reducing our carbon footprint and promoting healthy eating. In addition to providing fresh produce for our guests, the edible garden will encourage water conservation by utilizing collected rainwater. By collecting and reusing rainwater, we can minimize the impact on the environment. This is just one of the many ways we are working to reduce water usage and preserve this precious resource for future generations.”

Edible Garden by the Pool

The edible garden, located on the fifth floor by the pool, consists of a variety of organic produce such as lemongrass, pandan leaves, chili, mint and tomatoes. The herbs and vegetables will be  harvested regularly and supplied to Duke’s Kitchen, the hotel’s restaurant to be used in its menu. Furthermore, the miniature landscape adds lush shrubbery to the hotel so guests can enjoy a green experience.    

Repurpose Rain Water for Conservation

Additionally, the edible garden will be watered by recycled rain water. INNSiDE by Meliá Kuala Lumpur Cheras and Ekocheras Mall and Residences shares a rain water tank that could save water consumption by up to 85,000 liters. The management uses the rainwater for the garden and washing the parking lots. Overall, using collected rainwater is a sustainable and environmentally friendly practice that can help conserve water and minimize the impact of human activities on the environment.

In 2022, Meliá launched the Travel for GOOD campaign to highlight areas of focus within Meliá when it comes to its ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) performance. INNSiDE by Meliá Kuala Lumpur Cheras implemented a number of initiatives to reduce the impact on the environment. These include going plastic-free, having sustainable in-room amenities such as wheat straw yoga mats (in certain room types), and organic cosmetics. The hotel also features solar-powered LED lighting.
