Malaysians’ strong affinity for Australia

The love for Australia continues to grow in Malaysia, with arrivals in November 2023 jumping by 137.3% year-on-year. Notably, a significant 73% of Malaysian visitors are repeat travellers, highlighting the strong affinity Malaysians have for Australia.

Safety, value for money, and family-friendly experiences are ranked as the key considerations for Malaysian travellers. To complement this demand, Australia’s return to MATTA Fair will showcase the vast diversity of breathtaking landscapes, unique wildlife, iconic landmarks and friendly locals that are well-catered to all walks of travellers.

Andrew Hogg, Executive General Manager, Eastern Markets and Aviation, Tourism Australia, said: “Over the past year, interest in Australia among Malaysians has remained high – almost one in two express a desire to travel Down Under, and more Malaysians are actively planning trips there. This interest has particularly surged among family travellers. With increased flight options and our growing network of Aussie Specialists, planning your Aussie adventure is more convenient than ever. We are excited to welcome more Malaysian travellers to Come and Say G’day in Australia.”

More ways to fly to Australia

Travelling to Australia is now easier than ever, with flight updates in partnership with AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines increasing the number of routes to Australia:

      • Since December 2023, Malaysia Airlines increased services from Kuala Lumpur to Melbourne (from 14 to 15 per week) and Sydney (from 14 to 16 flights per week).
      • AirAsia Malaysia started its route from Kuala Lumpur to Perth on 11 March 2024, with 14 flights weekly. This complements AirAsia X’s existing daily service.
      • From June 2024, AirAsia is planning to fly direct from Kuching to Perth.

Australia continues to engage with Malaysian travellers in exciting ways, including a recent collaboration with ASTRO Warna for Projek Bapak Bapak, showcasing the numerous fun adventures that Victoria and New South Wales can offer multi-generational travellers. This popular show is currently re-airing on ASTRO.

We look forward to welcoming travellers to the Australia Pavilion at MATTA Fair 2024 to discover why there’s nothing like Australia.
