PENANG, MALAYSIA, 21 May 2024 – StrangebutCool, the eclectic indie fashion atelier, is making waves in Penang as it opens the largest showing of vintage bags in the world in Malaysia, launching in Georgetown on 24 May, 2024.
Embark on an immersive vintage handbag experience with StrangebutCool
StrangebutCool’s all-new The Private Collection of Vintage Bags offers an immersive experience through 85 years of 20th century vintage bags. The collection spans the unique, the incredible, the daring and the iconic from 88 labels across the Americas, Europe and Asia housed in a heritage shophouse in Georgetown, Penang.
Starting with one-of-a-kind hand-painted bags and custom-made creations in the early 1900s to lighting up the commercial fashion world in the mid to late 1900s with boundary-breaking use of materials and trendsetting designs, expect to see rare, novel and classic purses, clutches, knapsacks, satchels, totes and many more that shaped how handbags are still being conceptualised and designed today.
Visitors will leave the real world outside as they enter a wonderland of art, imagination and fantasy where handbags are the unifying story. From browsing an early 1900s Bohemian room to walking through a secret closet and emerging in a special place, the incredible stories of the handbags are told through thematic zones that will let you discover handbags that you never imagined.
Previously a five-star rated “hidden gem” attraction in Bali, StrangebutCool’s The Private Collection of Vintage Bags in Penang takes the collection to a new level of transportive experience and marks the first time that such a collection is available in Malaysia.
StrangebutCool is located in 3 Lebuh Klang, Georgetown, Penang.
Opening Hours: 11.00am – 7:00pm daily. Closed on Mondays.
Admission Fees: RM 100.00 (Local Admission), RM 130 (Standard Admission)

StrangebutCool, a fashion atelier that finds harmony in chaos
The launch of StrangebutCool’s The Private Collection of Vintage Bags in Penang also sees the opening of StrangebutCool’s first-ever physical shop in Malaysia where discerning fashionistas on the hunt for a new look can pick up their next statement-making fashion item.
StrangebutCool’s accessories and street fashion gives Malaysians and fashion lovers all over the world its unique brand of something new, something charming, sometimes strange, but always cool. A fashion atelier that started in 1999, StrangebutCool lives up to its name of finding beauty in unique juxtapositions of designs and materials. Be it art jewellery, one-of-a-kind bags or luxury soaps, StrangebutCool finds simplicity in complexity with clashing fabrics, unexpected materials, and visionary “informal chic” creations that hit the sweet spot between formality and informality.
“For over twenty years, StrangebutCool has broken fashion boundaries by finding beauty in the unexpected. We’re extremely excited to bring our unique style to Penang, a city known for its vibrant heritage and culture,” said Tina Lim, founder of StrangebutCool. “From vintage bags to bespoke accessories, we strive to bring fresh perspectives and unforgettable experiences to our customers. We are infusing fashion with our unique style and expression that celebrate individuality and creativity.”
