New Airbnb data points to stronger interest in domestic travel among Malaysian guests, with more travellers searching for destinations closer to home for mid-year escapes.

According to the company’s latest travel insights, Kuala Terengganu recorded the strongest rise in search interest among Malaysian guests, growing close to 60% year on year. Kuala Lumpur and Melaka followed as Malaysians increasingly look at shorter city getaways and nearby escapes.

Airbnb said Gen Z guests in Malaysia are also exploring a wider range of local destinations. Pangkor Island recorded more than a 20% increase in searches, while Penang and Langkawi are emerging as popular island and coastal choices for domestic “summer” getaways.

The data also points to a growing appetite for regional travel across Asia-Pacific. For Gen Z travellers, trending international cities include Bangkok, Perth, Jakarta, Ho Chi Minh City, Bandung, Busan and Melbourne, reflecting interest in destinations that offer culture, cuisine and vibrant city experiences within easy reach.

To illustrate the trend, Airbnb highlighted stays ranging from a kampung house-inspired villa in Langkawi and a Terengganu fishing-village retreat to a restored 1941 pre-war home in Melaka, a Federation bungalow in Fremantle and an antique canal-side home in Bangkok.
