Aurora Ventures Launches to Support Women Founders in Emerging Markets, Amid Funding Gap in Malaysia’s Startup Ecosystem

Kuala Lumpur, 4 June 2026 – Aurora Ventures launches with backing from inDrive, a global mobility and delivery platform scaled to unicorn status across emerging markets, for its 2026 pilot year. The initiative comes at a time when conversations around access to capital, mentorship, and visibility for women-led businesses are gaining momentum in Malaysia’s growing startup ecosystem, where female entrepreneurs face challenges in securing early-stage funding and scaling opportunities.

The initiative builds on five years of insights from the Aurora Tech Award and aims to invest in high-potential women-led startups at the pre-seed and seed stages, with typical cheque sizes ranging from USD180,000 to USD250,000 (approximately MYR846,000 to MYR1.18 million). The programme is informed by Aurora Tech Award data identifying underserved women founders across emerging markets.

The launch follows the conclusion of the 2026 Aurora Tech Award in Santiago, Chile, which attracted a record 3,400 applications from women founders across emerging markets, reflecting the growing global pipeline of women-led innovation.

The Aurora Ventures programme is built on a clear market observation: while women founders consistently demonstrate strong traction and scalable business models, they often face delayed access to institutional capital and less favourable valuation terms than to their male counterparts. Internal research involving more than 900 founders across 127 countries highlights systemic “competence scepticism” and higher performance thresholds applied to women-led ventures.

The broader challenges highlighted by Aurora Ventures also resonate with conversations taking place within Malaysia’s growing startup ecosystem. According to MYEG, women make up around 40% of Malaysia’s technology workforce in 2025, yet remain underrepresented in leadership and high-growth segments.

While Malaysia continues to position itself as a regional innovation hub, driven by fintech, AI, e-commerce, and digital services, yet access to early-stage capital remains a key barrier for many women founders.

Isabella Ghassemi-Smith, Head of Aurora Ventures said, “Over the past five years, we have consistently seen a pattern where exceptional women are building rigorous, high-quality businesses, yet still reach institutional capital later and often on terms that do not reflect their performance.

The success of our top finalists underscores the calibre of startups we intend to back and reinforces our focus on identifying and supporting high-potential women-led businesses across emerging markets.”

The 2026 pilot phase will focus on building an initial portfolio and supporting women-led startups with capital, mentorship, and access to global investor networks, helping them scale and progress to future funding rounds.
